Dog nail trims, baths and the Top Dawg add-on

Clicking nails on the kitchen floor and a dog who smells like the bayou after a rainy walk are two of the most common reasons Houston owners book grooming. At Pawliday Inn in southwest Houston, a dog nail trim and bath come with every grooming package, so you don't have to piece them together. If you want more, the Top Dawg add-on covers nail grinding, tooth brushing, flea and tick care, a special shampoo and anal glands. Here's how it all fits together.

Every grooming package includes a bath and nail trim

Our grooming packages are priced by size: small, medium, large and extra-large. Whatever size your dog is, every package includes:

So if you mainly came for the nails and the bath, you're covered, and your dog leaves brushed out with clean ears too. For a full walk through each package, see our dog grooming in Houston page.

Why nails matter more than people think

Long nails aren't just a noise problem. As they grow, they can change how a dog stands and walks. They can also snag on carpet or crack.

Signs your dog may be due for a trim:

Dogs who walk a lot on sidewalks may wear their nails down a bit. Dogs who spend most of their time on grass, carpet or the couch usually don't. Your vet can tell you how often your own dog needs a trim, especially if they have joint problems or a history of nail injuries.

Why baths matter in Houston

Houston's humidity, frequent rain and muddy yards mean dogs here get dirty fast and can stay damp. A regular bath clears out dirt, pollen and the smell that builds up in a coat that never quite dries. Brushing afterward helps lift out loose hair. If your dog has an undercoat that seems to shed all year, our de-shedding treatment is worth a look.

If your dog has skin problems, frequent itching or hot spots, check with your vet before changing their bathing routine.

What the Top Dawg add-on includes

Top Dawg is an add-on package for dogs who need a little more than the basics. It includes:

Top Dawg service What it's good for
Nail grind Smooths nail edges after trimming, so they're less sharp and less likely to snag
Tooth brushing A cleaner mouth between vet dental visits
Flea and tick care Extra help during Houston's long flea and tick season
Special shampoo A step up from the standard bath
Anal glands Helps dogs who scoot or have a strong smell from that area

Nail grinding vs. clipping

A standard nail trim uses clippers. Grinding files the nail down and rounds the edge. Many owners like the smoother finish, especially if their dog jumps up on people or sleeps in the bed. Some dogs are sensitive to the sound or vibration of a grinder, so tell us if your dog has a history of being nervous with nails.

Tooth brushing isn't a dental cleaning

Brushing during grooming is a nice extra, but it doesn't replace a dental exam or cleaning at your vet. If your dog has bad breath that won't go away, red gums or trouble eating, see your vet.

Flea and tick care isn't a replacement for prevention

Houston's mild winters mean fleas and ticks don't really take a season off. Flea and tick care during grooming helps, but your dog still needs regular flea and tick prevention. It's also a requirement for daycare and boarding with us.

Bathing during a boarding stay

If your dog is staying overnight with us, you can also add a basic bath as a boarding add-on, along with walks and extra meals. It's an easy way to bring home a clean dog after a week of yard play. See our dog boarding in Houston page for what's included in every stay.

Do I need Top Dawg to get my dog's nails ground?

Yes. Nail grinding is part of the Top Dawg add-on. A standard nail trim comes with every package.

Anal glands are part of the Top Dawg add-on. If your dog scoots often or seems uncomfortable, check with your vet too, since it can sometimes point to a health issue.
