Bathing a big dog at home usually goes the same way: a soaked bathroom, a dog who's only half rinsed, and a wet-dog smell that lingers for days. Grooming for large dogs is simply more work, from the amount of coat to the size of the nails to the effort it takes to dry a thick undercoat in Houston humidity. At Pawliday Inn, our grooming packages are size-based, with dedicated options for large and extra-large dogs, so your shepherd, doodle, retriever or Great Dane gets a groom that fits.
What every large and extra-large grooming package includes
Every grooming package at Pawliday Inn, at every size, includes:
- Bath
- Brush
- Nail trim
- Ear cleaning
- Groom
- A bow or bandana
The difference between sizes is about the dog, not the checklist. A large or extra-large dog has more coat to wash, rinse, dry and brush out, and that's reflected in the package. Rates change, so see current rates on our homepage. For an overview of all sizes, visit our dog grooming in Houston page.
Why big dogs benefit from professional grooming
Thorough rinsing and drying
On a big, thick-coated dog, leftover shampoo and damp undercoat close to the skin are common at-home problems. In a humid climate like Houston's, a coat that stays damp can contribute to odor and skin irritation. A full bath, rinse and dry gets down to the skin in a way that's hard to do in a home tub.
Nails that actually get done
Large dogs often hide overgrown nails well, and many don't love having their paws handled. Long nails can change how a dog stands and walks. A nail trim comes with every package, and if your dog does better with a smoother finish, the nail grind is available as an add-on. Our nail trims, baths and Top Dawg add-ons page explains the options.
Ears on big floppy-eared breeds
Retrievers, hounds and many large mixed breeds have heavy ears that trap warmth and moisture, especially after swimming. Ear cleaning is part of every package. If you notice odor, redness, head shaking or discharge, that's a reason to see your vet rather than wait for a groom.
Add-ons for large dogs
Our "Top Dawg" add-on package includes:
| Add-on | Why owners of big dogs choose it |
|---|---|
| Nail grind | Smooths edges after a trim |
| Tooth brushing | Adds to the dental care you do at home |
| Flea and tick care | Helpful in Houston, where pests are active most of the year |
| Special shampoo | An upgrade from the standard bath |
| Anal glands | For dogs who need it |
Each item is also available on its own, so you can pick only what your dog needs.
De-shedding for large double-coated dogs
Our Furminator de-shed treatment is offered for small, medium and large dogs. It's a strong match for large double-coated breeds like German shepherds, huskies, golden retrievers and Labs. If your dog is extra-large, call us at (346) 522 4472 before booking so we can talk about options. Learn more on the de-shed treatment page.
Tips for grooming day with a big dog
- Exercise first, if you can. A walk before the appointment helps many big dogs settle.
- Tell us about sore spots. Older large dogs often have stiff hips, sensitive elbows or arthritis. Let us know so we can handle them gently.
- Share behavior history. If your dog is nervous about nail trims, dryers or being touched in certain areas, say so when you book. It helps us plan.
- Brush between visits. Even a few minutes a week helps keep mats and loose undercoat under control, especially behind the ears, under the collar and on the back legs.
About shaving big fluffy dogs
It's tempting to shave a big double-coated dog for summer. Most groomers and veterinarians advise against it, because the coat helps protect the skin and may not grow back the same way. Removing loose undercoat is usually the better route. If you're considering a shave for a medical reason, talk with your vet first.
Combine grooming with a stay
If your dog is coming for dog boarding, basic baths are available as a boarding add-on. For a full groom before pick-up, call us to coordinate scheduling.
